Ready to move on / out?

As the seniority in NTU getting higher, the university side will never and ever try to help you anymore in terms of getting hall(hostel is what we called in NTU)...
The distance point in the scheme for international students is deducted from year to year and so as seniors, we all have to find our way to move on (our life) or move out from the university.
But, the point is, due to this newly introduced policy, many of the students are not eager to join the ECA in university anymore. This is an adverse effect of what the university side expects to see---> more Singaporeans to join ECA and hall activities.
In fact, not all of them are actively participating in the activities. From what I saw from past two years, most of the international students were the one who always fought for the positions in the clubs and societies in order to get enough points to secure a room in campus.

Since the introduction of the new policy, all senior students (international) have to consider to move out of campus as not enough points gained and also they will not join any activities in year 3( as the homeworks and assignments loads are getting heavier ). However, from the point of view of a final year student, he or she might think that staying out of campus is  very inconvenient as they need to meet up their professors for Final Year Project.
It's not all the SAO(Student Affairs Office) 's fault when dealing with this kind of issue. Anyway, life moves on and moving out definitely not my choice....as I still want to enjoy the campus life more one more year..

Well, here I am to share my thoughts.

In my opinion, what NTU is doing right now is, in fact, in line with most of the universities.

Universities have limited accommodations. So of course, priorities are given to juniors, decreasing along the year. This is under the rational that seniors are more familiar with Singapore and will face less problem looking for a place to stay outside.

As part of the domino effect, of course then seniors will be less tempted to join any university activities. But think on the bright side. This means you have less merit-oriented personnels. Only those who are enthusiastic enough would have joined in. The last thing all of us would like to see is committee members who question about merit every single moment.

So to speak, I was in such system when I was in 1st and 2nd Year. The system is no longer like this once we entered 3rd year. In Medicine, seniors are attached to hospital postings, so they need the rooms inside more than we juniors do. So they are actually given the privilege of staying inside by just obtaining the minimum amount of merit. (Minimum Merit Policy)

thanks for the thoughts...actually, I was just quite frustrated with the situation where the juniors in uni not even go for the recruitment for faculty's subcommittee...means if they are not going to be subcommittee, then, in what way and what reason we should vote them to become the main committee in the faculty? I agree with what you told me last few months..this is definitely true..but, maybe different people have different thoughts...maybe they want to make their life funnier or miserable..is their choice...just quite sad to see my friends all have problems in recruiting sub committees right now...

My dad told me there is no such problem in America haha. It is always on a first come first serve basis. And you get free booze every Friday and Saturday !!!

Anyway, my dad moved out of the dorm after a while because he wanted to try something different. He ended up sharing an apartment with a fellow Malaysian Chinese guy and another American Caucasian. Besides, he said the rental outside is not that much more expensive than inside either. And the best thing of all, the Malaysian government was paying for it haha.

Oh, by the way guys, students get FREE buffet breakfast/buffet lunch/buffet dinner at the student cafeteria everyday !!! Saves you a lot of money and you can go in anytime you like and get out as you please.

As it is a buffet, you can eat as much as you can haha. You may place a special order too such as a half-done beef steak with butter rice. That is what my dad ordered on his first day at the school and he threw away everything opps ! Apparently it was disgusting !

furthermore, I always have this kinda financial problem lor...work part time and study at the same time probably will push me to limit to earn maximum...not during the holiday...and the rental outside NTU is high...you are not ignorant right? Singapore has the highest living cost in South East Asia plus I really don't want to solely depend on my parents to get any financial support not like somebody else can speak louder with more money beside...Anyway, I still can secure a room next round...So, moving out of campus still have to consider after this year...

Haiya ! You knew that for a long time already. So you should always prepare for that. Besides, not everyone who has the privilege to study overseas came from rich family. My dad is the best example. In fact, he was zillions times poorer than you that he had to leave his family in Tawau and live on his own in Sandakan with absolutely no financial support from anyone, not even his own family. He too had to work day and night just to make ends meet. Life is not fair and it never will be. Timmy is anything but rich too. Just the Masters tuition fee in UMS alone has put on a big strained on his family. He's been asking around where can he get study loan and all. It's life and he is well aware of that and has not complained or pined at all. You just have to figure out how to put everything together. There are many more students out there like you. So you definitely are not alone.
