When talking about the radioactivity, it is always about the mutation and the radiation of the materials. Whoever live nearby or consume the water/food nearby, he/she will be affected and diseases start to outbreak. This is a very serious and very important issue to be handle.
Lynas with its rare earth processing plant in Kuantan, Malaysia is under construction and triggers public's anger towards this issue. Radiation is the thing that the residences concern about. But, the government never take any initiatives to confine the problem. At least we want to see the government stands out and discuss with the residences about the program. Never, they never concern about the health and safety of the people after all.
Why does not a single nuclear plant can be seen in Malaysia? But why does a rare earth processing plant can make a position in the map of Malaysia? We can't afford to lose anything in our homeland. Nuclear plant helps generating electricity by the radioactive process in the plant and once the plant has leakage, the radioactive material will spread out and ends up like Fukushima in Japan. The technology is not mature enough in Malaysia, and of course the manpower is also an issue whereby they are not well trained! But, why Lynas?! Same reason for it. For me, immature technology and manpower are the main reason why Lynas cannot establish the processing plant in Malaysia.
Though the government supports the move of Lynas by having the plant in the country, the citizens from all areas of Malaysia came out and voiced their opinion on MPK4 field in Kuantan yesterday. It is not the first time that the government takes such non-initiative. Last 709 in Kuala Lumpur which to voice for freedom in Election, the government also did not support or speak according to what the relevant council requested. This time, they are truly unmoved with what the people wants!
Economy downturn will occur ? What a prudent investor wants is the safety of the country and the stable politics in the country. The country now is in big trouble as the government never do what they said. The government always go biased with their own interest and own group! Maybe in this issue, Lynas and the so-called the independent Safety Investigation Council report again and again that the processing plant is definitely no harm to people and it is low radioactive and this may help to convince the investors to invest in Malaysia. What we want is a go-green and health policy in economy!!!! The government is like an ostrich. What they are doing right now is planting their head in the soil and not to see any danger, yet the danger is there and they said there is no harm at all.
I believe the chances of leakage and though the safety is there. What about lack of maintenance? Incompetent manpower? Can you make sure that there is no leakage forever? NO!
But one thing I am very sure is, since this is done according to government's decision, then ask them to stay nearby! They will then realize how harmful and scary it is. Surely! Some people have experienced it before and that's why they are protesting against it!
