CEE Gang ( always miss out Chee Yi)
重金鼠junior
铁观音junior
last but no least = Bball Gang(Phuket island少了JL,WC)!!

The next agenda: EOS M and iMac

Well, after working for nearly half a year, it's time to pamper myself with some gadgets or accessories. So, few things come in my mind and two of them are Canon EOS M and iMac, the latest design of Apple.

I don't really savvy in tech gadgets and I need comments from the pro. So, most of the people told me Canon EOS M has tremendous slow focus speed. But, as an amateur, I don't know how they define the focus speed unless I have a hands-on on the camera itself. No idea. So, at the time now, this will be in my list.

Another thing is the latest design of iMac. I am interested in having the iMac not just because of the design. Whatever inside the OS attracts me too.
Both of them are in my list and hopefully can complete the list in near future. Perhaps within 2 to 3 months?

121212

If that time

"If" is a perfect word to describe uncertainties.

If during the time when Sabah did not join the merger, Sabah could have become a very rich country. Yes, a country instead of a poor state. People live happily with the natural resources and the wealth given by God. No other people would exploit the source and take them away from Sabah. Only if that time the leaders of Sabah did not agree at the merger, Sabah could have a prosperous development till now.

If Malaysia is a country with wise government, all people regardless of Malay, Chinese or Indian will have a fair share of wealth distribution. Corruption is against the law and works are done according to procedures instead of connection of people. The legislation, judiciary and executives are independent, work well under the custodian of constitution. Malaysia with abundant natural resources and human resource will have a great leap forward under the good government's control.

There are too many IFs in the world and only IF can make the uncertainties perfect.

Part of Malaysia? State of Malaysia?

We are part of Malaysia or state of Malaysia?

I always think of this issue after reading the history of Malaysia. Not the history textbook from Malaysia government but other sources.

Have we been brainwashed or this is the reality that we are state of Malaysia? The concept of Malaysia according to the source I found, was that Federation of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore join together to establish a new nation called Malaysia. Almost the same as UK's concept where England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland come together and establish the United Kingdom.

Since Singapore was kicked out from Malaysia in 1965, the rules of game changed. The status of country was downgraded to state. The resources in our land were exploited especially the petroleum. Sabah, Sarawak and Kelantan as well as Terengganu (Peninsular Malaysia states) need to produce 95% of the petroleum royalty to the Federal government of Malaysia. Initially, we were not to give our natural resources to the federal government but why after 1965, why after the rules of game changed, then we only retain 5% of the petroleum revenue?

More and more negative comments from the social networking website stated that Sabahans/Sarawakians are stupid, staying on trees, places are awful etc. I totally disagree and angry with those statements. As we, Sabahans never say anything bad about other people and their places but why we are being bullied by them?!!! I mean, we are Malaysian right? Why our own people still want to criticize own people like that?

However, I just assume that this is just the minority people's mindset. A country's prosperity depends on people's mindset. If the mindset is healthy, the country can prosper and if the mindset is dirty, corrupted, the country will never prosper!

Mini Travelogue: Sipitang and its Satay

Thinking of Malaysian food like satay, where can you find it? Everyone would mention about Kajang Satay and of course Kajang Satay is not only famous among the local residents, it is also known for those are not from Selangor. Well, in Sabah, there's a small town called Sipitang.
Sipitang Waterfront, where you can taste the local Satay

Sipitang is located near the border between Sabah and Sarawak. This small town appears to be a "one-stop station" for Bruneian, Sarawakian and Sabahan to have a rest and trade. The local residents make use of the opportunity to begin their business, especially local cuisine. Satay becomes the must try food if u ever stop by Sipitang!

Satay stalls
There's a row of satay stalls at Sipitang Waterfront and you can choose from many. Besides satay, they also sell chicken wings. While eating satay, you must not forget to dip your satay into the special peanut sauce! The combination of the satay meat and the peanut sauce makes the taste great. Apart from the peanut sauce, you can also try with the bread which will give you amazing texture.

About 2 to 3 hours drive, Sipitang is easily accessible by land transportation. In near future, the town will be developed into an industrial area due to the development of oil and gas terminal nearby.

Mini Travelogue : Tip of Borneo

Tip of Borneo
When driving along the highway from Tuaran to Kudat, you will see the golden paddy field on both sides of the highway. We did not manage to take any picture because there is no space to drop by. So, we just passed by and moved on to the destination. Of course, our destination was the Tip of Borneo where the crystal clear water lies and white sandy beach stretches.
View from the cliff
White sandy beach

About 30 minutes drive from Kudat, Tip of Borneo is the latest destination which is discovered few years ago. It has a very clean and white sandy beach as well as the crystal clear sea water. The white sandy beach faces South China Sea while the Tip itself is the intersection of the Sulu Sea and South China Sea. Majority of the plants there are pine and oak trees. The view is fascinating and the cliff at the Tip of Borneo has been resembled as one of the attraction in Australia, as my friend described.
Tip of Borneo is surrounded by small villages and can hardly find crowd in the Tip, as what we can see in the crowded beach of Tanjung Aru (Kota Kinabalu, Sabah) or Patong (Phuket).
This shelter near the Tip

Jump shot at the Tip
For diverse tourist attraction, the government promotes the place as the Sunset Orchestra Performance stage besides natural scenery. The local residents also set up the accommodation nearby the tip. This can attract more people to come and see the view at the tip while enjoying the melody of the Sunset Orchestra.

However, the infrastructure such as roads linking to the destination is not well maintained. Thus causing extra travel time and giving bad experience and impression to the tourists who visit there. Therefore, the government is urged to repair the roads and provide better infrastructure and facilities in order to raise the reputation of the state as one of the most visited state in the country.

The richest yet the poorest

Richest, but poorest?

Sabah is blessed with abundant natural resources such as natural gas, petroleum, timber and also the majestic Mt Kinabalu. These features can make the people rich and yet the people still suffer in poverty. Income gap increases and no measures taken. Poor gets poorer and rich gets richer!

Why?

Poor governance and corruption, illegal refugees (who are the low wage, no skilled labours), many politicians but little promises and work done. These are the contributors to the worsening poverty in Sabah. Last time, when I discussed this situation with my friend, he talked about the attitude of the people was not right. That would be a determining cause for the poverty too.

How?  How to address it?

Can it be eradicate through free education? To correct their mind?
Can it be done through free internet penetration? To let them have more information inflow?
Can it be done by providing a better infrastructure? To bring up the economy and create more job opportunities?
Can it be done if and only if the government is changed? or institutional change? Election?

Too many X-factors to be discussed.

NTU Final Chapter : Dinner and Dance CEE 2012

It was a great night. All people are dressed up with sparkling attires. I just wore a normal shirt with jeans. Nevertheless, the event was full of laughters. Thanks to the emcee of the night. He was so entertaining!

It started with a simple idea. "I just don't want to be unemployed!". So, I chose civil engineering. But, I never expect that this can be a good outcome when I get the job offer before graduation. It seems lucky to me and of course I appreciate it very much. Now, I am going to face the new chapter of my life.

Cheers for our future, guys!!!
Of course, I will not forget my comrades in uni life. Without you guys, my uni life will not be the same!

Minimum wage : productivity and education

No minimum wage policy was implemented previously and in conjunction with the Labour day, Prime Minister Najib Razak announced the minimum wage for Peninsular Malaysia RM900 and for Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan(Federal Territory) with RM800.

The minimum wage policy was not implemented partly because of the compromising profit of the organization in the country. Most of the employers understand that once the minimum wage policy is implemented, they need to restructure the operation of the organization in which they need money to do so.

Theoretically, increase in productivity can bring reduction in manpower to do a particular work, and hence increase in the profit margin. This cannot be seen in short run but long term, yes. Productivity can be increased by bringing in the technology which can increase the work done and reduce manpower(low-skilled). Therefore, the profit can be increased in long run. With the profit generated annually, the organization can substantially transform themselves into a better and more productive one. However, most of the organization have large inertia to shift into a hi-tech production, which indirectly increase the productivity of the organization. Furthermore, the employers most of the time emphasize in the short term profit and seldom have a vision in the long term profit. Even though the money or subsidy is given by the government to increase the productivity, the organization refuses to use the money for this purpose.

Secondly, minimum wages policy is connected with the education level which the country possesses. Currently, the labour market is still quite healthy but in terms of wages, not too good. Employers tend to pay the employees, especially the local fresh graduates with low salary. Partly due to the lack of confidence in the integrity and competence of the fresh grads, and also the poor communication skills that the fresh graduates have. Some MNCs do not hire the fresh graduates easily due to the mentioned reasons. So, in the end, should we blame the poor education system of the country? And maybe this is why the employers object the minimum wages.

Some of them also afraid that with the implementation of minimum wages policy, the amount of workers to be hired will be reduced to compromise the profit of the organization. Hence, more employees will face retrenchment and unemployment rate will increase. Worse still and strongly connected to the economy, national GDP will contract (because no one has better spending power) and give raise to inflation. Macro-economically, currency will drop and the foreign investors will draw back from the country due to the high living cost but low currency rate.

For one good reason of the implementation of minimum wages policy, is to allow the employees to produce (with good attitude and motivated personality). It is a good incentive to let them produce and get more productivity for the organization. Indirectly will generate more profit and the profit gained can be used for better technology to run the organization and this cycle goes on and on. More and more money can be generated and more money to be distributed to the employees and they claim for increment. (Ideal case)

Fry: Free education and no PTPTN?

So, as the picture shows, the abolition of PTPTN (National Tertiary Education Loan) and free tertiary education tuition fee seem not to bring any benefits to the economy of the country. Especially, when you are talking about Malaysia, which has high debt percentage in GDP. The policy was mentioned by the opposition party during the speech in the villages and cities and convinced the people that if they will win the coming general election, such policy will be implemented.

Is there any benefits from the implementation? Or will it become larger burden to be bore by the government? Let's say if the country allows free education and abolish the loans, then, how doe the researchers in the universities to do the work? How do the teaching fellows work without the tuition fee? The opposition party was right that there are few countries in the world which provide free education but have to note that these countries mentioned are of high income societies, GDP per capita of the countries are top 10 in the world. However, the government incurs high tax on the people so that everyone in the countries can enjoy free education and also welfare in the society.

Malaysia is still way behind of top 10 list in GDP per capita and the society is more or less stuck in the middle income trap. It is strongly suggested that implementation of free education and abolition of PTPTN will not bring any benefits to the economy of the country. Unless the debts of the country is settled, the income of the society is improved, the tertiary education system is more transparent, adopts concept of meritocracy instead of racial quota, fair and just in the education system (educational reform), corruption-free administration, economy of the country can attract more FDIs and stabilizes the whole economic progress. Hence, we can talk about the free education and abolition of PTPTN.

Building for a low carbon economy ~ Arup |Thoughts|

Look at the nature of a national economy and it’s clear: the priority for moving to a low-carbon economy must be constructing long-life, loose-fit buildings to house the service sector jobs we need to create. Let me explain why.
A country needs to create jobs – nobody wants high levels of unemployment. So could manufacturing provide these jobs? I don’t think so, as demand for material goods seems to be falling. (The volume of goods destined for purchase by consumers that left UK factories or arrived at UK ports has been declining since 2002.)
So the service sector is key. Over the last 20 years there’s been a huge increase in the proportion of people employed in the service sector – working in retail, leisure, education, health and government services.
Far from being “lightweight” as some economists claim, services have inputs connecting them to the rest of the economy. And as services become more efficient, the per unit service output increases (you get more services from the same number of employees). So unless we then keep consuming more services, unemployment will rise.
Fortunately, services can – in most cases – expand almost limitlessly; they don’t clutter up your home with stuff in the way that material goods do. You can have more TV channels. You can buy more insurance. Though not necessarily desirable, you and your partner can both go out to work and pay for childcare services.
All these services need buildings (TV channels need studios, insurance companies need offices and childcare needs nurseries). But while the capacity of the service sector must be allowed to continue expanding, does this mean we have to keep constructing new buildings for the service sector?
To deliver a low-carbon economy, I believe we must make sure our service buildings are long-life and loose-fit, capable of lasting and adapting to meet the needs of services we haven’t yet dreamed up.
In the future, we might see more buildings like the Shard – which combines retail, hotel, office and living space – that can be easily reconfigured as demand for services changes.
For me, this is all part of trying to understand the innate nature of our free-market economy to develop sustainability thinking.

Problems with Sabah and the diversification of economy

Sabah is deeply blessed by the abundant natural resources such as oil and gas, forests, mine and land. As the state capital, Kota Kinabalu has the population of more than 700000 in the greater urban area (Inanam, Penampang, Kepayan, Tanjung Aru, Likas) and the main economy of the city is tourism. The land in Kota Kinabalu is relatively flat and thus development is more feasible compared to the rural areas. Resorts nearby city and beaches are built and developed rapidly in recent decades and this makes Kota Kinabalu as one of the fastest growing city in the country.

However, rapid urbanization of Kota Kinabalu leads to high rising living cost and residents are suffering due to the rising living cost and the real estate properties. Kota Kinabalu as an example, has a lot of middle income families. Most of them work as civil servants. The monthly income of average RM3000 is merely affordable for a family of 3. Imagine that you have to pay loan for your house, car, your kid's education (tuition classes in KK is absolutely profitable), insurance, utilities bills, petrol bills etc... It is highly financial burdened for the middle income families. Then, for lower income group, how do they survive? Rob? More part time jobs with lower wages? They are just suffocating in this kind of situation. Hardly to get a decent living. Attitude wise??  To blame who?

However, with proper planning and execution, economy in Sabah is definitely a positive outlook. Geographically, Sabah is located in the east of Malaysia and to the north of Sarawak. The proximity location to China, Korea and Japan, which these countries are the main exporters and the big economy powers in East Asia, can bring fortune to Sabah. Kota Kinabalu as the transportation hub in Sabah can be the leader in the state by providing the good facilities in the harbour for the loading and unloading of goods from these countries. Furthermore, the Sepangar harbour in Kota Kinabalu is one of the deepest harbour in Malaysia and the nearby KK Industrial Park provides the manpower for manufacturing. From the statement mentioned above, Sabah can be transformed into entreport economy which the imported goods can be processed and add values in them and export them.

Apart from that, airport facilities in Sabah are well developed and as the leader of all, KKIA gives one of the best and still the second busiest airport in Malaysia. Close distance from China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Korea makes Sabah as the favourite destination to the tourists to visit Sabah.  In terms of tourist attraction, Sabah is among the best and provides world class attraction. From top of Borneo to Tip of Borneo, from the heart of Sabah to Fringe of Sabah, Sabah can give the satisfaction to the tourists and more and more tourists pay the visit to Sabah due to the multi culture and protected rainforests, relatively good facilities provided. Ecotourism is what the state provides currently and possibly in the near future, service tourism will emerge as one of the income contributors to the state. Do you ever think of casino in Sabah? Maybe you should think of it. Of course with rules and regulations bound. This will bring Sabah economy into higher stage.

Vast land in Sabah of course is not only limited to the tourism. The land in Sabah is rich in nutrients and suitable for agriculture activities. Coco, palm oil, rubber and others commodities plantation are getting more and more popular in the state and have become the main income in Sabah since many years ago. Moreover, in highland area of Ranau and Kundasang, the farmers produce crops and vegetation and these products are sold to the market in Kota Kinabalu and Brunei(perhaps). There is also a dairy farm on the highland of Kundasang. The dairy cows are reared on highland and the farm also allows the visit from the tourists. Indeed, the farm provides two types of incomes - agriculture and tourism. Another agriculture activity which is noticeable in Ranau is the tea plantation. Sabah tea has special aroma and this adds value to the Sabah economy.

Natural resources will deplete from year to year. Therefore, there is no necessary to point out the biggest advantage of Sabah. The depletion is inevitable and hence solution for the depletion must be figured out! Diversification of Sabah economy is a must and this will ensure Sabah to progress well socially and economically. In addition, good government with the good policies planned and executed must also be the main factor that drives the economy.

SO?

Mabul Island in planning

Mabul

Cities :The Silent Rise of the Smart City

As Google hits the headlines for changes to its privacy rules across Europe, it is worth noting just how important it is to balance innovation, the immense power of knowledge networks and the legitimate concerns of the people who use these technologies.
In the case of Google, the group argues that it is a positive change, merely simplifying a patchwork of privacy rules across separate services and consolidating 60 policies into a single one.
The French data protection watchdog suggests the new rules are a cause for concern, while the EU authorities are investigating and the issue has been raised in Japan and the US, among others.
This is clearly an extremely delicate topic and it will be interesting to see how it develops. But it also holds a particular lesson for those of us championing the greater use of information and communication technologies (ITC) to help create the Smart Cities of the future.
Smart Cities have tremendous potential to improve the efficiency of our urban environments, to usher in a new era of growth through the digital economy and to vastly improve the quality of our lives in all sorts of everyday ways.
At the personal level, we can easily imagine a smartphone app that rings you up to let you know to put your coat on and walk down to the bus stop just in time to meet the No 73 into town.
At the macro-level, our recent report estimates that Smart Cities replicating the energy-efficiency successes of places such as San Diego could save the public and private sector some Euro600 billion per year around the world, while we could reduce carbon emissions by 15% by 2020.
The light-speed evolution ITC, the ‘internet of things’ and the utility generated by the latest smart phones and other devices have combined to put society on the cusp of a whole new age.
We are only beginning to scratch the surface of the potential benefits.
Yet at this critical point, it is more important than ever that we as a society start thinking about the checks and balances we will need alongside the opportunities that Smart Cities can provide in an increasingly hyper-connected world.
This is a major, strategic issue for cities. And it is no idle philosophical discussion either. The Smart City is already on the rise – still patchwork, but silently evolving and becoming more sophisticated, generating ever more efficiency gains for society applied to everything from contactless mobile phone payments to crowd-sourced data generation.
This is far too valuable an opportunity to risk, which is why everyone who supports Smart Cities needs to think about the political oversight, governance and technical controls that will be required to help people in society make important choices about how we use the now ubiquitous data emerging across our cities.

New term: Neo-merito-democracy

When I was in the Lee Kuan Yew Ministerial Forum last year, one of the audiences asked him a question.
" Is that called political conscious when you have participated in the voting for the election ? "
For me, if I were that person, I would not ask like that because my answer was same as Mr Lee.
His answer to that audience was:
"The political conscious is not about having participation in voting alone. I think you were just too excited after the voting and that's not called political conscious! The correct way of political conscious is to have an idea in the social, economic, welfare, progress of the nation etc. ( i.e. current affairs ). So, I don't think you are political conscious enough."
Well, it was not hard to find that in Singapore, the political environment is still stirring around People Action Party which in charge of the country for nearly  half a century. All the best things they can contribute and the people in Singapore enjoy high living standards but suffering from the limited spaces of living and large influx of foreign talents. The policy which in favor to the foreign talents attraction has declined in recent years and still Singapore government wants to retain its foreign talents' help. The methodology of retaining talent is actually very simple. Treat them nicely and make them feel at home (Singapore has done better than its neighboring cousin).
Unlike in Malaysia where the policies in favor of  Malay. The story begins in 1969, when the opposition almost toppled up the Allied Parties government and triggered the anger of the extremists in the Allied Parties. The extremists in the party went to the street and then beat the other races on streets. Hence, 13 May Incident(Riot) broke out. There were casualties and hence, the government went into emergency state under the control of National Movement Council (MAGERAN) in 1970. At the same year, the government started to implement the New Economic Policy which intended to minimize the income gap between the Malay and the other races in the country.
The policy worked well but subsequently, some of the people became too dependent on the policy and the whole procedure and system became corrupted. The government insisted that there was no corruption neither deliberately helping Malays. Indeed and honestly, most of the Malays and the natives(Kadazandusun, Iban, Orang Asli) are still living in poverty. The rich becomes richer, but the poor becomes poorest. Most of the people were exploited by this policy and yet some of them embrace it. The ignorant group who still embrace this policy has become more and more arrogant. Some of them announced that we (Chinese, Indian) should go back to our homeland.
But, where is our homeland? We are holding MyKad(IC in Malaysia) and we speak the same language as you. Why and who the hell are you to chase us out of this beloved nation? You have no rights to say so! Politically, socially, economically, we should stand an equal chance to work together for a better country development, but not to work for somebody else! This is the era of neo-democracy! Not the 60-70s where you cannot say something which is supposed morally right but politically wrong. Now, it's the time for us to join our hands to move into the new era of democracy- Neo-merito-democracy !
Corruption, inequality, non-transparency, political scandals, we had enough! Enough is Enough!!!! And yet you announced that the illegal immigrants as the local natives and we(Chinese, Indian, Kadazan-dusun, Iban, Orang Asli) are not natives or Malaysian, asking us to go back our "homeland", what the fxxk is this?!!!!!!!!! Moreover, you invite Lynas coming to Malaysia to give us radiation from rare earth! Are you kidding me?!

IF YOU INSIST THAT THIS IS HARMLESS, YOU STAY NEARBY FOR A YEAR AND THEN TELL US, "IT'S TOTALLY ALRIGHT!!!!" TRY IT AND I BET YOU WON'T DO IT!
Ladies and gentlemen, please see things with your conscience. This is our country, our one and only country. Where can you find such a nice country with abundant natural resources, colourful demographics and cultures?
We must not vote with our feet anymore. We can't afford to lose a beautiful home like this and witnessing our country fallen just like that! We need to fight for our rights of being a Malaysian, a truly Malaysian!

Radioactive pulse

When talking about the radioactivity, it is always about the mutation and the radiation of the materials. Whoever live nearby or consume the water/food nearby, he/she will be affected and diseases start to outbreak. This is a very serious and very important issue to be handle.

Lynas with its rare earth processing plant in Kuantan, Malaysia is under construction and triggers public's anger towards this issue. Radiation is the thing that the residences concern about. But, the government never take any initiatives to confine the problem. At least we want to see the government stands out and discuss with the residences about the program. Never, they never concern about the health and safety of the people after all.

Why does not a single nuclear plant can be seen in Malaysia? But why does a rare earth processing plant can make a position in the map of Malaysia? We can't afford to lose anything in our homeland. Nuclear plant helps generating electricity by the radioactive process in the plant and once the plant has leakage, the radioactive material will spread out and ends up like Fukushima in Japan. The technology is not mature enough in Malaysia, and of course the manpower is also an issue whereby they are not well trained! But, why Lynas?! Same reason for it. For me, immature technology and manpower are the main reason why Lynas cannot establish the processing plant in Malaysia.

Though the government supports the move of Lynas by having the plant in the country, the citizens from all areas of Malaysia came out and voiced their opinion on MPK4 field in Kuantan yesterday. It is not the first time that the government takes such non-initiative. Last 709 in Kuala Lumpur which to voice for freedom in Election, the government also did not support or speak according to what the relevant council requested. This time, they are truly unmoved with what the people wants!

Economy downturn will occur ? What a prudent investor wants is the safety of the country and the stable politics in the country. The country now is in big trouble as the government never do what they said. The government always go biased with their own interest and own group! Maybe in this issue, Lynas and the so-called the independent Safety Investigation Council report again and again that the processing plant is definitely no harm to people and it is low radioactive and this may help to convince the investors to invest in Malaysia. What we want is a go-green and health policy in economy!!!! The government is like an ostrich. What they are doing right now is planting their head in the soil and not to see any danger, yet the danger is there and they said there is no harm at all.

I believe the chances of leakage and though the safety is there. What about lack of maintenance? Incompetent manpower? Can you make sure that there is no leakage forever? NO!

But one thing I am very sure is, since this is done according to government's decision, then ask them to stay nearby! They will then realize how harmful and scary it is. Surely! Some people have experienced it before and that's why they are protesting against it!

Diarrhea days

End with Diarrhea in 2011, start with Diarrhea in 2012~

WHAT THE FXXX IS THIS!!!
